"Working Stiffs"
I made this 18" x 18" quilt with men's suit material as the background. The calacas were cut from lightly rusted cotton. The "clothes" and "shoes" were made from a men's tie and men's shirting material. I added a few embellishments and the twisted yarn around the edge. This will debut at Artistic Artifacts, Alexandria VA on October 22, 2011.

Guitar Hero

Opening tonight, Thursday, July 28, 2011 at the International Quilt Festival Long Beach, CA my quilt "Guitar Hero" will be in the "Bridges" exhibit for Quilts on the Wall: Fiber Artists. Scroll down to see the close up I posted a while back. 38" across by 48" long.

Made a quilt for a friend. She owns an alpaca farm in Oregon and
sent me some fresh shavings. I felted the fur onto a quilt to send
to her. It's 22" x 17" about the size of a fat quarter.

Knee High to a Grasshopper, 36" wide 48" long. This quilt was made for an exhibit put on by Dinner at Eight Artists and I just found out I got juried in!

My quilt, along with about 38 others, will be part of a juried invitational exhibit at International Quilt Festival Long Beach, July 28-31, 2011. I enjoyed the rusting process and laying out the design. Now I'm waiting to enjoy seeing it in the whole exhibit.

This quilt is pieced from Marimekko fabric scraps. Then I stitched thick Xs and put a wash of yellow paint over the top. Next, I stitched thicker colorful Xs. Very fun. Only about 13 x 13 inches.

Asked my husband to sweep the garage floor after welding and grinding metal. I got a cup of fine metal dust, put it on vinegar soaked fabric and stored it away. After 1 hour it's already rusting. Will open it up in a day or so and see what it looks like.

Terry's book was "Small Things." I put little pieces of fabric together to form one big design. It's kind of like a big crowd made up of each small person. The words are "small" translated into many different languages.

Made these two crazy quilt blocks in a class at Houston IQF in 2004. Fun to play with the fancy stitches on the machines and the teacher gave us scads of silk tie fabric.

These were great exercises to do. Some I used on other larger quilts and it was great to try them in a small format first. Others I decided were not something I want to explore further. I am doing the journal quilts in 2006.

Now my journals for 2004. Couldn't put a face on a human figure - some kind of psychological blockage. "Faced" my fears and this is what came about.

"I Remember Mama" quilt from Houston IQF 2004. It's in the "I Remember Mama" book. Title is "Tres Muchachas." My daughters and I made it together. It's 17 by 43 inches.

Early 2004 I entered the Ugly Necklace Contest and became one of the ten finalists. What fun making ugly. www.landofodds.com I made fabric beads out of the least desirable fabric I could find, twisted wire and feathers into the beads. I used some plumber's pvc, covered it with fabric and had strips coming out of the center. Make a Haiku poem about dating and fishing and there you go.

Also entered it into World of Beauty at Houston IQF and now it's touring with the Quiltart 10 exhibit. April 2006 it will be in Chicago at IQF and Summer 2006 it will be in France. Exciting for my quilt, but I've never been to France.

Took a class in 2002 or 2003 with Kathleen Pappas. She had us use this format for our quilt. The only thing we could pick was our fabrics/trims and the design in the center. I picked a coffee cup. This is almost a 20 inch square. Fun class. Got to play with trim, bobbin work and machine quilting. I named it Latte' da.

Summer of 2002 took a Terry Waldron class. She is so very inspirational. It was a colorful whimsical landscape type quilt we were supposed to make. This lagoon came about. It needed something in the foreground, so I put a mermaid. Not really a mermaid type person, but it works. I also made this fish because I wasn't sure I liked the mermaid quilt, but now I like the colors of the mermaid quilt better. Mermaid is about 20 by 30 inches and the fish is about 16 by 17 inches.

Went to quilt camp and entered this in the camp challenge. The challenge fabric looked like water to me, so I did a distorted stacked log cabin look with water running between them to represent different continents. About 20 inches in a circle, titled Casa del Mundo, or something like that. July 2002, post 911, my artist statement said something about if we could all live in another's house and see the world through his/her eyes, would we be more tolerant and loving? Kind of like walking a mile in another person's shoes.

Also took a somewhat traditional class, I think in 2002, and made an apple core quilt. Fun, but don't really want to make another one. It's about 13 by 25 inches.

Made traditional lap quilts for a few years, then took a Melody Johnson class where we made a few small quilts to play with her technique. This one is a little smaller than 8 1/2 by 11 inches.

The rooster that started it all. I had made a few traditional bed and wall quilts. A friend gave me this rooster kit and I enjoyed fusing the pieces down and hand quilting the background.
Found a chicken crook and hung it in my dining room.
